Secret Window (2004)

Starring: Johnny Depp, John Turturro, Maria Bello
Directed by: David Keopp
Running Time: 1 hr 42 mnt
MPAA Rating: PG-13 for violence/terror, sexual content and language.

Movies adapted from Stephen King's story has their own variety which could become extrimists to one another. From the unwatchable (since it was so freakingly bad) Children of the Corn series to the excellent movie ever made such as The Shawshank Redemption. Secret Window falls somewhere in between, albeit closer to the latter than the former.

Secret Window is yet another story by Stephen King that tell tale about a writer's circumstances. Johnny Depp stars as Mort Rainey a writer that chooses to live in an isolated cabin near lake six months after he found out that his wife was cheating on him. His dull, mess life was getting even messier when a knock in the door one afternoon awoke him and leave him with terror for most of the movie as the man on the door with thick Mississippi accent accusing him for stealing his story. This man is John Shooter portrayed marvelously violent by John Turturro.

The thriller hence the twist of the movie was an easy to guess and would only be surprising to an unattentive viewer. To those hardcore fan of Stephen King (such as me), would felt that it even more easier to guess the twist up to the point where Mort opened the door of his cabin to find Shooter there with battered manuscript and accusation of Mort's plagiarism.

But, the guessable twist had been considered well enough by the director as he doesn't bother to do harder than he should to conceal the twist plot given. He is just right to put a hint here and there in order to build a logical path to the conclusion and doesn't get suddenly jump to the conclusion after the high effort in concealment of the plot like many thrillers suffer nowadays. And it earns this movie another point of reward from your lovable reviewer.

What interest most of this movie was Depp and Turturro's performance. We could still see the resemblance of Cap'n Jack Sparrow when Depp was doing his monologue, very intriguing however, as he is the man who tried to escape from his past and stranded in the lonely cabin in the middle of nowhere. But you'll find it lovingly charming nonetheless. And Turturro is believably cruel as if we put ourselves in the Mort's position we would be frightened as well.

All in all, this movie wasn't that great, i'd say that this is a mediocre thriller with hardly no surprises at all. But it's so lovely (and entertaining) to see Depp's performance here and the ending? don't bother to ask, the ending is (gimana gw nyebut "gw banget" dalam bahasa Inggris?) what would i call a "satisfying" ending. A few moments before the movie concluded I had a hunch that this movie would had an disappointing ending but fortunately, my hunch was left as a hunch and that's why i'd call the ending as a 'satisfying' ending.

Poster coming, up next

Rating: ***/**** -- One of the best of Depp's performance.

Science Fiction

Here's a brief story about his interest background. It begun since God knows when, as a child, this boy named Rhama had a great interest in the sky especially when the sun had descended in the far west and illuminates dusk sky with the numerous twinkling stars, planets and moon. Often when the lights went out due to an electrical error, this boy ascended the roof of his house, sit on the clearest and highest spot and mesmerizing the work of God represented in the vast black sky above his head.

However, as days grows old and his mind get anchored to the so-called ground named reality the interest has been left untamed, and ultimately buried. This was happened 5 years ago when he decided to attend the Faculty of Computer Science instead of Faculty of Astronomy. But the dream, the interest buried and untamed as it was never killed nor it get diminished from his concsciusness.

Compelling to his love in works of literature and its many form of manifestations (such as movies, and books) he begun to regrow the dream. As he read many works that tell tall-tales about space exploration especially by this man, Sir Arthur Charles Clarke, he begun to open his eyes yet again, jerked off his head to the back and observe the beautiful yet untamed dream he had left few years ago.

"The Fountains of Paradise", was the first to open his eyes. In the novel, Sir Clarke describing about space-elevators the new means to travel to the space with the cost only fractions of what it originally takes when travel using the current means. At first, he decided that the works was a pure fictional imagination of one certain enius. He left it stored in his brain-cell intended to save it for a pure information purpose only.

"2001: A Space Odyssey" was another in which he felt so close to the giant planet in the solar system named Jupiter, a giant mass of gas with no solid surface and 9 times gravity higher than the Earth. He never travel the sky, he didn't know what it feels like to float in the zero gravity environment, he couldn't even imagined being alone in the vastness and emptiness of the open space but the Jupiter described in the novel force an urge within his desire to squeak through the gas cloud and eternal storm that forms the eye of the Jupiter and to observe what was beneath the heavy cloud blanket of Jupiter. It was so magnificent, magmanous to him and so it begun another path of his life open to be considered to take.

For the weeks that had passed, he did his homework rather well, he learns more about the Jupiter, Saturn, and Neptune. He had read every article in the National Geographic magazines that had to do with the space environment. And ultimately, he felt like he could do some research, uses his imagination, explore his un-exercised creative mind to be a science-fiction writer as he observes none of the current writer in Indonesia dares to touch with the subject.

"Rendezvous with Rama" was the next novel from Sir Arthur C. Clarke that waiting in top of his list to read. And he is more than ready to once again explores the unknown universe beyond the atmosphere of our puny Earth.

Boogie Nights (1997)

Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Burt Reynolds, Julianne Moore, Heather Graham
Directed by: Paul Thomas Anderson
MPAA classification: R (for strong sex scenes with explicit dialogue, nudity, drug use, language and violence)

The 'R' rate given to this particular movie by MPAA doesn't came out of nothing. It has every possible reason for a movie to recieve such rate. Full frontal nudity, explicit human genital views (male / female), excessive drug use, some milder-than-average violences, and many-many swearing words.

Real Quick Reviews

Due to my loaded schedules I barely had enough time to write a decent reviews let alone to put the latest update to this page. However, at this preciously little time that I could spare, here's some notable movies with quick reviews on each of them. Some very few that I had forcingly inserted in my thight schedule which unfortunately would still be in that ultra-thight-breath-of-air schedule until the end of this month.

Man on The Train (2003)
Film Perancis. Sangat sangat menarik.

Adegan klimaksnya very rewarding. Notable.

Natural Born Killers (1994)
Getir, tapi membuat saya tertawa. Kuat. Stylish. Rating: **** / ****. Top abis pokoknya.
